Road traffic reduces pedestrian accessibility – Quantifying the size and distribution of barrier effects in an African city

Motorised traffic is growing rapidly in many African cities, creating barriers to the movement of pedestrians. This paper analyses barrier effect roads Praia, capital Cabo Verde. We measured potential trips homes other people and food shops analysed distribution across areas social groups. The contributes literature by: 1) quantifying for first time an city; 2) mapping at city level, 3) developing indicators that account land use (i.e. what on side road). used spatial analysis estimate, each building city, two indicators: proportions buildings within 600m are located main roads. then those using maps, descriptive statistics, cumulative frequencies, bivariate associations, regression models.
